Hello and welcome to ActiveU. My name is Mick Hurrell and I’m a man on a mission! I’m dedicated to working with the over-50s generation to help Baby Boomers get Fit to live your best life!

 

That goal means something different to each and everyone of us. It could be being fitter to spend more active time with children and grandchildren, or to go on the adventure holiday of a lifetime. Perhaps losing weight, tackling an illness or long-term condition, or realising the ambition to take up a new sporting activity. It could simply mean building your strength, energy and flexibility to keep doing the things you love for longer.

I’m a 50-something Functional Fitness Coach, plus a Nordic Walking, Boxercise, and Move it or Lose it instructor. I’m also a walking, running & cycling group leader.

Why so many different qualifications? Well, there’s overwhelming evidence that the combination of regular varied exercise and a healthy diet and has enormous benefits for our medical and mental health, fitness, happiness and length and quality of life. Variety and fun are the key to success!

2. It’s never too late to get started and enjoy the benefits

of a healthier lifestyle!

To slow, halt, or even reverse the inevitable physical and mental effects of ageing, and to combat many chronic health conditions, you don’t need to become a gym bunny to succeed! Not at all...start by committing to a healthier diet and getting more active! 

Sit less, move more and do more of the stuff you like. Why not try new activities, indoors and outside? Discover what works best for you…and have fun doing it!

Because we're different!

As 50-somethings, we have a different mindset, capabilities and insecurities, compared  to instructors in their 20s or 30s. That's just a fact, and I really get that – because I'm like you. Our bodies can start to change radically. Muscle and bone loss, menopause and hormone changes, aches, pains and chronic health conditions are all too real conditions facing men and women in Middle Age. Is that you? Now the good news:

  • Medical research shows us that, getting fitter and living a healthier lifestyle can add up to 11 more quality, active years to your life.

  • It's never too late to start to enjoy the benefits – 50s, 60s, 70s. Movement is medicine!

 

What are you waiting for? As a Personal Trainer and fitness coach, I understand that starting out at the gym, or starting jogging can be daunting for both men and women. We shouldn't let that get in the way of us getting fitter, stronger and healthier.

My philosophy is that we don't need to pump iron, or pound the treadmill staring at a TV screen,  wishing it was over! Getting fitter should be both challenging and fun! So, lets get creative. Indoors and outside. Circuits, flows, suspension, aerobics, jogging, boxing, team sports. Mix it up: with strength, cardio, flexibility and mobility. In 1-2-1, groups and classes! It should leave us wanting more, not thankful that it's over! Don't you agree?!!

There's a bewildering amount of fitness resources out there on the internet. However, unless you know what you're doing you can be ineffective, or even hurt yourself. Besides, what's really the best fitness solution for you to meet your goals?

Discover the power of Nordic Walking

Turbo-charge your Walking!

Nordic Walking is a hugely popular outdoor fitness activity in Europe and it's really taking off the in the UK! It's easy to see why. Nordic walking –walking with special, ski-type poles – is a full-body aerobic and strength conditioning exercise that's easy on the joints and suitable for all ages and fitness levels!

  • It uses up to 46% more energy than walking and uses 90% of your muscles, compared to fewer than 50% when walking and jogging!

  • Walk intensity can be varied from gentle walks for people with health concerns, to workout walks – which are a great way to improve fitness, lose weight and tone your whole body. 

And like other forms of moderate activity, regular Nordic walking can lower your risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, stroke and some cancers. It can also be used as part of a weight-loss exercise programme.

Leamington Spa is an ideal location to explore and enjoy the inspirational parks and countryside on the door step. But I can run courses in south Warwickshire and the northern Cotswolds too!

I'm a British Nordic Walking accredited instructor. I offer Nordic Walking introductions, skills coaching and organised walks for couples, friends-and family and turn-up-and-walk together groups. 

 

As a qualified fitness coach, I can also help to integrate Nordic Walking into a bespoke, holistic movement-based fitness and strength programme for you.

Attend as many groups as you wish. Designed  and delivered with the 50+ generation specifically in mind, you'll find them challenging, safe and fun! Do something. Then try something else. Do more, get better, feel better! 

  • Working out in a "motivational pack" is an increasingly popular approach to exercise. Workouts with others improve consistency because they involve a commitment.

  • ‘No shows’ and cancellations get noticed by others and positive peer pressure can help curtail the urge to skip a session… or, perish the thought, quit!
